Class Types & Styles Explained

There are many different styles of yoga out there & choosing the right one for you can get a bit confusing. I have trained with a number of different schools in a number of different countries & am committed to my ongoing journey of learning & sharing. I currently offer 5 “varieties” ; Vinyasa, Power, Yin, Yang/Yin & Guided Meditation.

Read below for a brief explanation of each & to learn which you might like to give a go.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa Yoga is a gentle, flowing sequence of asanas (postures) & is often referred to as “Flow Yoga”. A vinyasa class typically starts with a number of sun salutations to warm up the body before building to more intense stretches. As we move through this practice linking each movement to breath we aim to get out of our heads & into our bodies by creating a balance between body & mind.

This practice aims to cultivate an awareness that links each action to the next, constantly developing tools such as the power of our breath, simple stretches & lessons in patience, respect, kindness which can all be applied both on the mat & in our lives.

Power Yoga

Power yoga is a strong, dynamic & energetic vinyasa flow. These classes are designed to build up some heat in the body as each pose leads into the next whilst maintaining a link between movement & breath.

This practice will aid to improve strength, stamina & cardiovascular fitness as it can get quite powerful. All classes are varied, engaging & playful to challenge you both physically & mentally.

Undisturbed calmness of mind is attained by cultivating friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, & indifference toward the wicked.

Yin Yoga

Yin yoga is a much slower, much more grounding practice (basically the opposite of the yang flows seen in Power or Vinyasa classes). We hold floor based postures for around 3/5 mins (for a deeper stretch/ greater release) followed by a shorter rebound pose (to reset & re-balance body & mind).

Yin Yoga poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body - fascia, tendons & ligaments with the aim of improving flexibility, improving circulation & reducing stress levels.

This practice is a fantastic gateway for those who are interested in meditation & mindfulness as it allows you space to turn inward & tune into your mind & the physical sensations of the body.

Guided Meditation

Meditation is an ancient practice which is becoming increasingly popular for those wishing to slow down, relieve stress & improve mental concentration & clarity.

A guided meditation is led by another person's voice. Through this practice I will guide you to relax specific muscles in the body until you are comfortable & may lead you through mental images & visualizations. Whatever route we take, the purpose of each meditation is for you to achieve mental, emotional & stress relief.

A guided meditation will last up to 30 minutes.
